Description:The Herb Society of America (HSA) Research Grant is awarded annually to students, professionals, and individuals engaged in research on the horticultural, scientific, and social applications or use of herbs throughout history. Projects must follow the HSA definition of an herb, with the defining characteristic being usefulness, past or present, including value for flavoring, medicine, ornament, economic, industrial, or cosmetic purposes. The HSA Research Grant is intended to support small, self-contained research projects that can be carried out in a short period of time. The grant work is expected to be completed in one year.

Grant funds may be used for investigators’ compensation, professional and technical assistance, research supplies and materials, or costs of computer time. Indirect expenses, including the following, are not allowed: purchase or maintenance of computer, laboratory, or office equipment; tuition, textbooks, or conference attendance; private garden development; and travel to research site(s). Proposals that include indirect costs are eliminated.

Applications can be downloaded on the contact website and must be submitted by the deadline in electronic form via email. Grant recipients are announced in May.
