Description:The Promising Young Writers Program represents the commitment of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) to early and continuing work in the development of writing. NCTE established the school-based writing program in 1985 to stimulate and recognize students’ writing talents and to emphasize the importance of writing skills among 8th grade students.

Students who are in the 8th grade in the present academic school year are eligible to be nominated by their teachers. Schools must be located in the United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, Virgin Islands, or American Schools Abroad. Home-schooled students may submit through a cooperating school. The number of nominees allowed from each school is determined by the school’s average eighth-grade daily enrollment.

Two written submissions (best writing and themed writing) by each student are required. The best writing submission should sample what the student considers his or her best work. The work must not exceed six typed, double-spaced pages. Research papers, term papers, and novels are not accepted.

The themed writing submission must be written on the common theme selected by the Promising Young Writers Advisory Committee. The current theme is “Beyond Boundaries.” Students choose a book, poem, story, news article, film, website, or something else they’ve read that breaks boundaries, either in its content (e.g. a story about something controversial) or its form (e.g. a story that uses multiple genres or voices). Students then write about why they chose this text and why/how it crosses boundaries in important ways. Writing should be no longer than four typed, double-spaced pages, and it should be in a different genre than the best writing entry.

Teachers should complete one entry form per student and upload the student’s papers as one file (maximum of 10 double-spaced pages). The contest brochure with more information, as well as the judging guidelines, are posted as PDF files on the program’s website.
