Description:The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History awards the National History Teacher of the Year title each year in an effort to promote the study and love of American history. Any full-time kindergarten through grade 12 educators who teach American history (including state and local history) are eligible for the award. American history may be taught as an individual subject or through social studies, reading, language arts, and other subjects.

The nominated teacher must have at least three years of classroom teaching experience and must be planning to teach for at least one year following the award year. Past state and national winners are not eligible, and self-nominations are not accepted. Nominators may be students, parents, colleagues, principals, or other administrators familiar with the teacherís work. All nominees are notified with instructions for submitting supporting materials to complete their nominations. Nominations must be submitted online.
Eligibility:Public, Private, Charter, Other (including homeschool, 501 (c)(3) organizations)
Award(s):The national winner receives a $10,000 prize and a trip to the national award ceremony. State winners receive a $1,000 prize, a collection of classroom resources, and recognition at a ceremony within their state.
Deadline(s):Nominations are due March 31, 2019. Nomineesí supporting materials are due April 30, 2019.
