Description:Slow Food Miami makes Edible Garden Grants that support student-centered vegetable gardens in Miami-Dade County schools. The goal is to address childhood nutritional issues such as malnutrition and obesity, as well as to encourage students to develop healthy, respectful attitudes toward food. Funding includes planting support and consultation throughout the growing season.

Eligible applicants are public and private prekindergarten through grade 12 schools in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Each applicant school must have a water source; suitable location with at least five hours of sunlight; at least two classrooms actively engaged with the garden; two designated teachers in charge of the garden, with administrative and PTA support; maintenance plan to tend the garden during school breaks; and plans to connect garden activities to the classroom, to use garden herbs and vegetables in taste workshops and at least one meal, and to involve cafeteria staff with the garden. Applications must be submitted using the online system.
