Description:The Pet Care Trust provides small grants to prekindergarten through grade 8 teachers in public and private schools for the purchase or care of small classroom pets. Individual teachers may apply for one grant for one classroom pet per school year. Teachers who have previously received a grant are only eligible to apply for the Sustaining Grant.

Grants are intended to support pets or aquariums in the classroom for the purposes of teaching children to bond with and care for their pets responsibly. Grants are available for small animals such as a guinea pig, hamster, mouse, rabbit, or gerbil. Dogs, cats, and other larger house pets do not qualify. Science projects such as hatching chicken eggs, caterpillars/butterflies, and worms/composting do not qualify for this program. Grants may not be used for the purposes of research or experiments of any kind.

There are six types of grant programs available, from which a teacher must choose the one that is most appropriate for the classroom pet and available retailers:
1) Rebate Grant of $75 for small animal or birds or $125 for reptiles or aquariums for purchases at a pet store.
2) Sustaining Grant of $50 to maintain an existing classroom pet.
