Description:The Smart from the Start Awards are designed to reward preschool programs, including Head Start programs, for developing effective nutrition and physical activity action plans to improve wellness of children and adults in the program. Teachers apply on behalf of their schools, with all prizes awarded to the winning preschool programs. Applicants must be at least age 21 and employed in an early childhood center or a US elementary school with prekindergarten. More than one teacher from the same program may apply, but each teacher may represent only one class or group of children. Homeschool programs are not eligible to enter.

To apply, preschool teachers must develop an action plan to ultimately create long-term improvements for balancing nutrition and physical activity in the preschool community. The action plan must be the entrantís original work. Applying teachers should review the rules and judging criteria, both posted online, for guidance in developing an action plan that meets the criteria. Teachers are expected to incorporate materials from Together Countís Energy Balance Pre-K curriculum for ages three to five. The materials (in English and Spanish) are available at

The application is available online and must be completed and submitted using the online system by the deadline. Winning preschool programs will be notified around May 1.

Award(s):One grand-prize winner receives $20,000; 10 runners-up each receive $2,500; and all winning schools receive a set of books valued at $1,000.
