Description:Earthwatch offers fellowships to classroom teachers in kindergarten through grade 12 to take part in field-based science and environmental research projects. To be considered, a teacher must demonstrate interest in natural and cultural conservation, sustainability, and lifelong learning. Educator fellows must intend to remain in their current school or institution for at least one year following the fellowship. A teacher may receive no more than two fellowship awards over the course of a career. Recipients of Earthwatch educator fellowships are not eligible to apply the following year.

Educator fellowships are awarded through a competitive application process. Candidates are considered based on available funding and application quality. Fellows are assigned to projects according to their interests, skills, and availability based on expedition dates, as well as specific project needs and grant restrictions. Around 50 teachers are typically selected and placed in teams. Each year, Teach Earth identifies projects for its program. Recently, teachers had the opportunity to study the impact of climate change in the cloud forest of Ecuador, in the desert of Arizona, and at the Arcticís edge in Canada.

Educator fellowships cover expenses for participation in the expedition, including meals, accommodations, research permits, equipment costs, and on-site transportation. Stipends to cover some or all of the travel costs to and from an expedition site are typically provided, but vary by fellowship. Earthwatch educator fellows are considered volunteers on the expedition and are not paid for participation. Various donors fund fellowships, and educator fellows are expected to write a letter of thanks on school letterhead to the funder, care of Earthwatch, to acknowledge the fellowship.

To apply for an Earthwatch educator fellowship, teachers must first complete the Educator Fellowship Interest Form, which is available online. Applicants are contacted if Earthwatch has relevant grant funding and provided with a link to the Educator Application, which must be completed within two weeks of receipt of the link.

Interest forms are kept on file and educators who are not currently eligible for a fellowship may be notified about future fellowship grants.
