Description:The National Football League (NFL) Foundation Grassroots Program is a partnership of the NFL and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to provide financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields.

There are two levels of support for community, middle school, or high school football fields. Field Surface matching grants are available to finance resurfacing and installation of new synthetic sports turf surfaces. General Field Support provides grants for capital projects that are not associated with the actual field surface, including the installation or refurbishment of bleachers, concession stands, lights, and irrigation systems.

Selection criteria include feasibility of the proposed project, preferably including written contractor’s estimates; project readiness including timeline and sources of match funding; impact upon the neighborhood; support from the community; security of future field maintenance and safety; and capacity of organization and its partners to carry out the project. Strong preference is given to proposals that seek to upgrade existing facilities that are in poor condition or are underutilized; demonstrate active use of the fields; attract matching funding that exceeds the minimum required 1-to-1 match; involve local partnerships with nonprofit community partners (e.g., USA Football, parks and recreation departments, YMCA branches); provide for continuing maintenance and field safety; and involve youth football programs that are currently registered and in line with USA Football Heads Up Football safety initiatives.

Eligible applicants are middle or high schools, or nonprofit community-based organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status that are located within NFL target markets and that serve low- to moderate-income areas within those markets. Additionally, the applicant organization must have at least one full-time staff person, be in existence at least three years, have a proven track record in real estate development or parks programming, and assure that all youth football coaches will be certified through USA Football’s Coach Certification course. Proposals must be submitted by email.
